The BMW Shorties Drives Film at Urbanscapes 2019 and Celebrates Record-High Short Film Submissions.

23rd October 2019

Malaysia’s most prestigious short film competition receives over 130 short films and will host its first regional film festival from 16th to 24th November 2019.

Kuala Lumpur, 23 October 2019 – BMW Group Malaysia today revealed that the BMW Shorties programme has received over 130 short film submissions for its competition year 2019, the highest amount ever recorded in its 13-year history of discovering and supporting local talents in film and digital content creation.

“From the very beginning, we have seen remarkable talent emerge with visually stunning and creative interpretations of the themes we present every year and this year, we have received the most number of submissions for the competition. The BMW Shorties has provided and continues to provide support to the many creative minds here in Malaysia who have also gone on to create outstanding content of their own, garnering recognition internationally. We at BMW Group Malaysia are humbled to be a part of this process, empowering local creative talents to pursue their ambition in the film and digital content space,” said Sashi Ambi, Head of Corporate Communications, BMW Group Malaysia.

Ambi added that the premium automaker is also thrilled to be hosting Tayangan BMW Shorties at REXKL for Urbanscapes 2019, screening a diverse range of Southeast Asian films. He said, “The BMW Shorties is bringing films back to REXKL for a great whole week at Urbanscapes 2019. The REXKL was an iconic institution for films in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, and it is only fitting that we celebrate the BMW Shorties this year at this iconic venue.”

Tayangan BMW Shorties is a week-long event at REXKL featuring the works of many notable Southeast Asian directors across the region including past BMW Shorties winners – Zahir Omar’s Fly by Night and Shanjhey Kumar’s Jagat. The event will also feature five exciting workshops driven by local film industry leaders, such as director Adrian Teh (PASKAL: The Movie) and documentary-maker Indrani Kopal (Incarcerated Rhythm), both of whom are judges for BMW Shorties 2019.

The event will culminate with the BMW Shorties Awards Night on 23rd November 2019, where the 13th Grand Prize Winner will be announced. Awards for a range of supporting categories, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Sound Design and the People’s Choice Award will be presented, along with a new category for Best Student Award.
